The lexical chunk theory and its teaching philosophy have been researched a lot in English. It evidently plays a significant role in English teaching. At the same time, the theory also applies to Chinese teaching. This article reviews the history and development of lexical chunks, analyzes Chinese chunks and defines Chinese chunk which combines the characteristics of Chinese and the theory of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL).At the same time, the paper categorizes the lexical chunks into three types:fixed structure, fill-in structure and related structure. To improve the efficiency of teaching, the paper further classifies it into seven more detailed types:idioms, fixed match, proper noun, sentence patterns, phrase frames, related words and group words.What’s more important, this article applies lexical chunk theory to TCFL, especially in the field of oral language teaching. The author chooses three popular spoken Chinese textbooks, Real-life Practice of Elementary Chinese, Intermediate Spoken Chinese, and Advanced Spoken Chinese;classifies the lexical chunk appears. By analyzing the oral language textbooks, the author describes the general characteristics of language chunk distribution. The research shows lexical chunk theory can improve the efficiency of oral Chinese teaching and offers some suggestions to Chinese leaner.
