"Gaze" is an important concept in the study of visual culture. The original meaning of "gaze" is staring at an object. With the development of philosophy and art, the function of gaze expands, not only a way to watch, but also becomes an ideology, including cognitive, and contacts with the identity of the subject. As a new cultural attitude,"gaze" has deepen our understanding about the issues of cultural power, cultural experience and cultural identity.As a special way of watching,"gaze" develops the relationship between the eye and visual. Then the viewing of the subject comes not only from himself, but also completed with the object’s gaze at the same time. Thus, self-awareness and form of consciousness is accomplished through the gaze. Painting bases on visual activities, and from the very beginning of creation, gaze happens naturally. Painters gaze the object, and at the same time being gazed. Through the inner gaze and external gaze, artists watch themselves and the world, and then obtain accomplishment and identity recognition of their own. This paper will introduce the concept of "gaze" in psychoanalytic theory, illustrates how gaze is used in the painting process by new perspective, and discusses the impact of the gaze behavior on artists self-constructed.
