Sponger, as a unique cultural carrier of the Warring States Period, reflects the lifestyle of corporal class from the micro-level perspective. It is also a reflection of themainstream culture’s involvement in social life. The Records of the Grand Historian isone of the works which early took notice of Spongers. This paper, based on TheRecords of the Grand Historian, firstly clarified the concept border of "sponger" andanalyzed the different status, fate types, and characters of spongers in the WarringStates Period. Furthermore, it classified these images and dissected the origin of theircharacters, and then explained the main feature in the description of sponger in theWarring States Period. Finally it summarized the principal means of artistic expressionin building the images of spongers and this laid the basic pattern of Chinese literarycharacters. From the view of the literature history, the sponger image built by TheRecords of the Grand Historian not only reflected The Records of the GrandHistorian’s achievement in literature and fine art and its contribution to literary history,but also indicated the literature in early Han dynasty acknowledged the independentaesthetic value of vivid images.
