The early and the middle Ming dynasty valued relationships with surroundingminorities, especially with Mongolia. Under the tributary system, the Ming dynasty andMongolia kept close contact with each other by exchanging goods. The tributary systembetween the Ming dynasty and Mongolia was built by Ming Taizu, matured during theMing Chengzu period, and became more and more stable ove the next three monarchies.Though analyzing the tributary process, governing organization, and goods prices, thesystem of exchanging of tributaries and giving presents can been seen. This researchconcludes that tributaries from Mongolia are mostly horses, while items from the Mingdynasty were much more diverse, such as different qualities of silk, porcelain, books, and medicine. These items not only spread the advanced skill of the Ming dynasty, butalso showed the complex culture of Ming dynasty. The goods exchanged under thetributary system promoted the integration of the farming culture and the nomadicculture.
