Ashima (Yi) and Zhao Shutun (Dai) are the Narrative Love Poems of the Dai and Yi Nationalities and are considered gems of Dai and Yi literature. This kind of literature has been handed down for generations because it is so colorful and timeless. They portray heroes with mythological devices and reflect social life with love themes as the main channel through which characters are portrayed. Therein, through artistic devices, are found portrayals of justice and evil in contrast. It is this which makes these works immortal. In order to encourage a more harmonious and abundant society throughout all of China, especially in regions of Dai and Yi nationalities, knowledge of these works’unique contributions to human culture is needed more commonly.Using the parallel research method and comparative literature analysis approach the different characteristics of language, the plot structures, characters demeanor, the aesthetic senses as well as variation in theme construction between Ashima and Zhao Shutun are achieved.In order to explore possibilities regarding why there are so many differences, this paper also explores variations in geographical features, social and historical background, economic activity, religious structure, marriage approach, and national spirit between the two peoples.The applied element of this research effort is apparent in its applicability to daily life of modern peoples, and overall stresses the need to improve research regarding the two nationalities for the greater purpose of enriching all Chinese literature studies and the profound effects such activity have on readers. Furthermore, research regarding these two bodies of work by nature helps these two peoples to have greater means to improve their lives and society, as outsiders have access and therein can foster interest in cross-cultural exchange.The two stories have a particular value with regards to cultivation of deeper morality and the curing of contemporary spiritual demise. The stories assert that we should work hard, resolve problems regarding gross materialism via a discovery of a fundamentally different understanding of true friendship, a path to peace of mind, a dream (particularly non-materialistic dream) and the power to realize it. If modern people have some loss in their love life, they should know these stories can also help to comfort them, as has been exemplified for thousands of years. The preciousness of feelings and the life-force itself are of key focus, and higher valuing of them is understood to be the source of interrelated solutions.
