English And Chinese Social Said Predicate The Cultural Connotation And Translation

This thesis mainly conducts a study on the influence on translation of English and Chinese social appellation terms caused by cultural differences, strategies and methods to overcome it. First, the thesis reports the research present situation both at home and abroad. An induction is employed to carry out abundance surveys on concepts and types of English and Chinese social appellation terms. Similarities at the macro area and dissimilarities at the micro area are demonstrated. By analyzing different concepts toward "ldo(old)", differences of social hierarchy and religion, different social systems and values, different patriarchal beliefs and legal systems between English and Chinese social appellation terms, it comes to the conclusion that cultural difference is the cause for those dissimilarities. Based on Nida’s "functional equivalence" principle, some factors such as situation, status, social distance, age, etc. are involved in the process of translating English and Chinese social appellation terms. Factors such as the educational level of interlocutors, gender, location and intention of interlocutors also play a part. Then the proper translation methods are found, which are semantic equivalence method, semantic decrease and increase method, pragmatic and equivalent method. Finally, due to the discrepancy between two appellation systems, some culture-specific terms are hard to be translated into another language. Concerning these terms, we usually adopt two ways to deal with them:domestication (appeal to target readers’ perception) and foreignization (introduce culture and preserve original national flavor).There is great practical value to do research on social appellation terms. With the development of society and human concept, social appellation terms have been continuously renewing and varying. Researches on this subject will surely bloom and therefore this paper is expected to make humble contribution in the field.
