As a representative of the British aestheticism genre, Oscar Wildecreated a large number of aestheticism literary works, which played animportant role for the development and growth of the aestheticismgenre. To analyze his aestheticism ideas, paradox is a good perspectivewhich is presented through close reading of sentences and text in thisdissertation. There are four parts in this dissertation. The first part is mainly aboutthe development of the aestheticism genre and the impact of OscarWilde on this genre. The second part is the paradox sentences by OscarWilde, which are analyzed through the paradox theory of Brooks. Wecan conclude that Oscar Wilde criticized the philistine and hypocriticalmatters of Victorian society profoundly through these sentences. The third part of the dissertation is focused on Wilde’s novel, drama and fairy tales (The picture of Dorian Gray\Salome and FairyTales). By close reading, we can find many kinds of paradox in his worksand that the relationship among these paradoxes is clear. There arethree main kinds of paradoxes: paradox between beauty and ugliness, paradox between morality and freedom, paradox between spirit andsoul. No matter what paradoxes Wilde presents, they are related toWildes aesthetic ideas strongly. All paradoxes are pointed to one basicparadox: The antinomy relationship between art and reality. Finally, byanalyzing the whole life of Oscar Wilde, combined with its paradoxideas in his works, we come to a conclusion: paradox ideas are not onlythe main ingredients of Oscar Wilde’s works, but also the indispensiblecornerstone of his life.
