Hoche and Olunchun have many commons in social environment and literature. And they only have spoken language, so they own a large quantity of oral literature, in which national epic is the treasure. In the epic, the most important theme is that hero revenge on their opponent. This thesis will compare Hoche’s ethnic epic with Olunchun’s ethnic epic to find their commons and look for differences.The first chapter used Vladimir Propp’s Morphology to analyze Hoche’s epic ManDu Hero and Olunchun’s epic GePaQian Hero’s narrative structure, and sum up their functions. Because Hoche and Olunchun have lots of contacts in epic, so we can define the two epics into the same series of sequences, which contains some functions. Different ethnics appear the same functions in different ways. At last, we analyzed three plots components as follows:hero’s parents captured and hero born in a special way; hero prepared to leave for revenge; hero died and reviviscence. Through the comparison, we learned the same function in different epic, differences in the function, the reason of differences.The second chapter compares the epic’s content through several aspects. Such as relations between hero and villagers; the ways of tilting contests; religion in the epic and marriage’s function. Although the epics have the same narrative structure, cause of difference in living environment, ethnic culture, the plot components have ethnic character.The third chapter analyzed characters’images in the epic. The characters may be broadly classified as follows:hero, opponent, supporter, and provider. Every role is composed by different characters. First, as to hero, Mandu Hero of Hoche is a shaman and a model of chatelaine, while Gepaqian Hero of Olunchun is a wisdom and brave hero; he showed selfless devotion to everyone. Secondly, opponent in Hoche is a monster, while Olunchun’s opponent is human. Different essences of the opponent result in different ending. The role of Supporter consists of many characters, the magic horse and women shaman plays an important role in the epic. They help hero to win in the war, but in different ways, which accord to Hoche and Olunchun’s culture.To conclude, this thesis regards two famous pieces of epic in Hoche and Olunchun as subjects, and uses the method of morphologic, parallel study and field work, in order to gain commons and differences between the two ethnic epics. And the thesis focuses on find the reasons from background and religions. The research result is of great significance to ethnic literature.
