Located in the intersection of Eastern and Western culture, as well as the culture in the south and east of Yellow River, Hami is an important ancient town on the Silk Road. Long historical development has contributed to its unique culture which bears distinct mainstream culture context and also traditional customs of ethnic minorities.Man’s activities in Hami area dates back to Fine Stone Age. In the1930s, geologist Yang Zhongjian collected a large number of fine stones in Sandao Valley and Qijiao Well, discovered some sites of using fire. It proved that primitive human beings had activities in Hami about seven or eight thousands years ago. Later on, Hami area was the territory of Sai, Wusun, Dayueshi, and the Hunts until the Hunts were defeated in Western Han Dynasty. In60AD, emperor appointed Zheng Ji as "Qi du wei", or "du hu", who administrated Wu Lei city and protected the northern countries in the west of Che Shi. Since then, the wide western part, including Xi Yu, had been under the jurisdiction of the federal system; western people had been members of Chinese nations. After the south and north dynasties of Wei and Jin, Rouran, Tujue, Huihu, Mongo, etc, had activities in Hami one after another. They left us rich historic sites. The value of petroglyphs plays a vital part in the research of pasturing people’s history, scientific, development and unique artistic appreciation, because petro glyphs-are the major existing articles of Hami cultural traces. The focus of my research is to survey, record, and build data bases about the statistics of preserving environment, specific pictures, diseases and so on in73locations, over1900petro glyphs in Hami area.
