This thesis demonstrates the author’s study on the cinematic process of Jia Pingwa’s novel, including the characteristics as well as its significance and value in today’s communication systems. The chronological structure of the thesis is based on the publishing years of the studied novels. The structure of the thesis is organized as follows.The first section illustrates the study of the films adapted by his novels in1980s. By analyzing the social background, the origin and style of his novels have been found, namely, the origination and continuation of rural lives, as well as the focus and explanation of local revolutions. These lead to the high stylization in the cinematic process of his novels, which reflected both realism and lyricism. Different characteristics are then further analyzed based on their themes and rhythms. At the end of this section, the communication affects among different people groups have been compared.In the second section, the author investigates his novel in the1990s. The Chinese society in this decade was more business oriented than it was in1980s and therefore the themes of Jia’s novel have been changed accordingly. During the1990s, playwrights attempted to script the novel with the theme on bandit. Also, they reorganized by the order of commercialization. The main characteristic of the cinematic progress for Jia’s novel, during this period, was bold changes of the original novel, pursuing commercialization. However, the process was failed in both communication and art affects, due to external and internal factors.For the first decade in the21st century, Jia’s novel "Happiness" is analyzed for its cinematic process. With the rapid development of Chinese economy, his style, focus and skills are also changing as time goes. Thus, the author regards the change of novel into movie "Happiness" as a revolutionary re-creation and achieves success in communication affect.Finally, in the conclusion section, the author summarizes the value of the cinematic process for Jia Pingwa’s novel. It not only promotes the spread of contemporary literature, but also helps to establish the Shaanxi’s local culture brand.
