This article aims to start from the gaze concept by analyzing the gaze contextof contemporary art theory, to represent watching mechanism between menand women existing in the history of western art, and to reveal the male artists’desire and privilege of gaze. Meanwhile, this paper interprets the culturalsubconscious in-depth, which helps readers understand how feminist artcriticizes and resists men’s gaze.This article explored in detail Barbara Kruger, an American conceptual artist,and her unique merging of found photographs with aggressive text. Itdiscovered the cultural subconscious of the metaphor in her works from theperspective of gaze. First, research the characteristics of Kruger’s style of artcan clearly understand the organic structure between her works. Secondly, usethe principles of work analysis to further examine the power of her expressionfrom simple human elements into a complex social phenomenon, and then intothe internal structure of the public awareness. Finally, Kruger’s concept of gazestruck to the depth of social and culture, in particular, focused on several socialissues in feminism, consumerism, power and influence.Kruger’s art structure is kind of dialectical materialism and anti-epistemology;the spiritual connotation of her works is perhaps the inner foundation of thepost-modern cultural subconscious. Therefore, this article also explained avariety of cultural symbols in the concept of gaze, by exploring Kruger’s artpractice on conscious awareness and its influence of cultural breakthrough.
