The “X jiushi X” structure is used a lot in modern Chinese. It means that it is X,but not some other things. By confirming X, it expresses strong personal feelings andsubjective tendencies. It is very important to know the context if you want tounderstand this structure.Guided by Cooperative Principle, we are going to describe the structure andinterpret it. By using comparative analysis and other methods, we will do researcheson its meaning,, distribution, and usage. This thesis is divided into three parts:From the aspect of syntax, the X mostly are nominal structures. And there arealso some X are predicate structures. The nominal structure includes nouns,attribute-head structures, num.-cl.-n. structures and “de” structures. The predicatestructure includes verb structures, adjectives and adverbial-head structures. Weusually see “jiushi” as “jiu+shi”. But when there is a “ba” at the end of the structureor we can replace “jiushi” with “jiu”, we consider it as a word. From the aspect of distribution, the structure could be a sentence or a part of asentence. It also could be a clause of a complex sentence. In the text, the structurecould not only start a sentence, but also end a sentence. It also could be in the middleof a sentence. The structure usually uses personal pronouns and repetition for the textcohesion.“X jiushi X” is a construction. It lays great stress on the confirmation of X. Thepersonal feelings and subjective tendencies it carries changes with the context. Wecall it contextual meaning. The contextual meaning is a part of the structure’s meaning, and it is unpredictable without context. The structure is used to emphasize theobjectivity of the fact, the salient features of things, the stability of essence and thefirm attitude.
