The Sixth Generation of Director is a general name given to the academic director in the educational circle of China according to the characteristics of every generation. In general, it refers to a group of young directors who were major in director and at Beijing Film Academy in the1980s, having received the orthodox education and professional training in such major as film arts or related majors, and were active at the film directing stage in the1990s. The early films, which were in line with the psychology of recording the actual eventsand praising highly multivariate, free, differences and forgive, paid close attention to the silent majority at the bottom of society. It was the objective documentary that made it unique and break away from the Fifth Generation of Director, who put emphasis on the grand historical narrative in national fable style. The Sixth Generation of Director had their eyes on the different life of ordinary people, the love and hate of the small potato, displaying the humanities concern in their rebellious reflection. In this thesis, the author will try to make a text analysis and type research from the perspective of youth subculture on the deviant images in the early films directed by the sixth generation of directors, on the premise of multicultural interpretation of the symbols and humanities concern. It will make an in-depth analysis of the value orientation of individuation for the film deviant roles, and explore the artistic expression value of early films directed by the sixth generation of director in specific period, which will provide a new dimension for the study on the early films directed by the sixth generation of director, and broaden research perspective on the films. The whole thesis consists of four chapters. The main exposition of the paper begins from the first chapter. By inspecting and summing up the understanding of deviant both at domestic and overseas, the connotation of deviant will be defined from the perspective of the youth subculture:in the paper, deviant refers to various small potatoes whose behavior violate the national laws and regulations and moral standards, or whose way of life would contrary to the secular sense in the movie text. The images of deviant in early films directed by the sixth generation mainly belong to these three different types, which is the source of the study. In the second chapter, the author will sum up the styles and characteristics of several youth subculture of the deviant in the film from the viewpoint of youth subculture studies, adopting the style theory of the Bermingham School. For example, the styles and characteristics of county thief, juvenile delinquents, gay, and disenchant policeman, etc.The third chapter mainly discusses the cultural significance of the deviant images in the early films directed by the sixth generation.First of all, the cultural causes of the deviant images in the early films directed by the sixth generation will be discussed. By combining with the actual situation in the1990s in China, and according to the interaction between the sixth generation of directors and the culture at that time, the paper will summarize the context of birth for the early films directed by the sixth generation as well as multicultural context during the postmodern and postcolonial era through all-round, multi-angle thinking. Most of the sixth generation of directors has received complete and systematic higher education. Their sedimentary depositsand attainments in art and music provide strong operational material for their early film production. Their reference and imitation to the world movie masters are reflected in the texture structure of the films, and conform to the culture of China and the theme style of the film perfectly. Secondly, the paper will talk about the deviant images’cultural consciousness of rebellion in the early films directed by the sixth generation. The first aspect is the deviant images’ rebellion in role. The author tries to explore the deviant images’ youth in the early films directed by the sixth generation from the perspective of psychoanalysis and mental analysis, such as identity crisis, collective unconsciousness, etc. the second aspect is the deviant images’ rebellion in the concept of films, including the non-episodic narrative of the film itself and open ending. Last but not least, the deviant images’ rebellion in the mainstream culture will continue to discuss in the paper. Some of the youth subcultures are reflected in the shaping of large quantities of typical deviant images in the early films directed by the sixth generation, such as rock and roll literature and riffraff literature, which are formed in the late1980s and have the unique borderline features. In recent years, there are increasingly studies on the films directed by the sixth Generation of Directors, however, the research points are too complicated, and thegoodstudies andbadones areintermingled. Most of the former researches were incline to study from the cases and artistic expression, while the study which is from the perspective of youth subculture and aims at the deviant images in the films directed by the sixth Generation of Directors is rare, moreover, such study lacks of systematic organization and investigation. The current thesis aims at opening up a new subject about the study on the early films directed by the sixth generation of directors by drawing references from the previous achievements.
