This research takes the common version of Vimalakirti-nirdesa-sutra as the original version to be emended, which is translated by Kumarajiva and printed by Jinling sutra printing house in the autumn1870(the ninth year in Tongzhi period, Qing dynasty), and chooses the manuscript of early medieval Dunhuang sutra photocopied in Dunhuang Treasure as the major reference in the process of emendation, with Yongle Northern Tripitaka and Dazheng Xinxiu Dazangjing consulted at the same time. And two kinds of methods are employed:discriminating between different versions and appealing to careful reasoning when no single version can be relied on. As a result, some errors in the original version committed by the engravers of printing boards and some illogical wording in the text have been corrected. The preface first introduces the writing and translating processes of Vimalakirti-nirdesa-sutra and the Chinese translations preserved in Dunhuang documents, and then emphasizes the life, personality and learning of Kumarajiva. Conjecturing his age when he first gets married and deduce from this point, this research intends to provide a new evidence for making sure of his birth year and death year. In addition, by gauging his mood in the old age, this research suggests that it is Kumarajiva’s special life experience that binds him and Vimalakirti-nirdesa-sutra together.
