| This paper focuses on the transliterated words in the three Chinese Versions of Vimalakirti Sutra currently preserved in Taisho-pitaka, namely, the ones by Zhiqian in Wu Dynasty of the Three Kingdoms Period, Kumarajiva in Hou-qin Dynasty, and XuanZang in Tang Dynasty respectively. Based on the analysis of the characteristics of the translators and their translation styles, it sorts out, compares and illustrates the transliterated words found in them from the perspective of literal translation and free translation in an attempt to reveal the different ways to translate Buddhist sutras and its historical evolvement. Finally, this paper, further looks into the characters appearing in the Dunhuang manuscripts P.4646, to expound the features of characters in manuscripts and demonstrate its development by taking some simplified characters as well as the popular forms of some as example. |
