As Chinese or Mandarin is becoming increasingly popular all over the world, including New Zealand, Confucius Institute started Mandarin Teaching Program there.I was honoured to have opportunity to be one part of it as Mandarin TeachingAssistant in New Lynn Primary School and Kelston Girls’ School.During my work there I combined the educational principles, those are focus oncreativity, motivated study on students’ own, enjoyment, grouping study in class etc, with Mandarin teaching together. Based on students’ need, I designated the yearlyteaching plan, carried on the daily teaching and checked every school term about theeffect and feedback of my teaching method.Teaching features are mainly below three points, first of all, making teaching inclass interesting to students, make them very easy and relaxed during study, to helpthem master the basic communicational skill; secondly, using the multi-media to makeclass multi-form, like singing songs and playing games etc, which is to motivatestudents to learn by themselves; thirdly, carring on Chinese Cultural Event withteaching topic to inspire students on Mandarin study. Not only taught, but also paid a lot attention to students’ learning pace andlearning effect, make sure they get what I expected to get. The exam and questionaireat the end of year showed the success of my teaching, even though there is somethingto be improved, the result is satisfactory. And the teaching plans and the thoughts mayhelp other mandarin teachers there afterwards.
