In the field of Second Language Teaching and Learning, Needs Analysis is a process which determines’what to teach’and’how to teach’, and it is the primary step of instructional design. Teaching Chinese as Second Language (TCSL) is a branch of Second Language Teaching and Learning, so it also needs Needs Analysis to make’teaching’and ’learning’more appropriate. This thesis attempts to investigate learning needs of Japanese and korean undergraduate students whose major is Chinese in Chinese Higher Education Institutions, with qualitative and quantitative research methods. The whole research is based on questionnaires, and supplemented by group interviews. Investigation design is based on the Needs Analysis Mode which was constructed by Hutchinson&Waters, and combined with domestic scholars’related research and actual teaching situation. The general status of target needs and learning needs of Japanese and korean undergraduate students in Chinese Higher Education Institutions is presented through analyzing the first-hand data provided by95subjects who come from International Cultural Exchange School of FuDan University and International Education School of ShangHai JiaoTong University. It gives a brief introduction of the necessity of the research in TCSL, and the points of the research. The second chapter is Review. It mainly introduces research achievements of Needs Analysis in the field of Second Language Teaching and Learning home and abroad. The third chapter is Design of the Research.
