Ever since The Lady of the Camellias was translated into China, it has deeplyinfluenced Chinese literature, especially Chinese romantic fiction. This thesis, wth thefocusdissertation on the mainly takes the translation of The Lady of the Camellias,analyses the relationship between the translation of The Lady of the Camellias and thedevelopment of modern Chinese romantic fiction by giving an overview of themduring the three different periods, and discusses how translated literature has the facilitatedmodern Chinese romantic fiction.The first chapter depicts the translation of The Lady of the Camellias and Chineseromantic fiction from the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China. In1898, TheLady of the Camellias was first translated into China by Lin Shu, called Yishi Paris LaTraviata, which caused great repercussions. During those years, Chinese romanticfiction had gone through a dramatic change, including its status, the form and contentof the novel, etc., which from the traditional one to the modern one. In some extent, YishiParis La Traviata promotes all that.The second chapter gives a review of the translation of The Lady of the Camelliasand Chinese romantic fiction in1920s and1930s. There were some new translation, suchas Xia Kangnong’s. Due to the New Culture Movement, Chinese romantic fiction had beencriticized, but it made efforts to adapt itself to further modernization.The third chapter analyzes the translation of The Lady of the Camellias andChinese romantic fiction in1940s. The War of Resistance Against Japan broke out in1937,though there was some negative impact, Chinese romantic fiction still gained a lot andbecame Chinese modern romantic fiction in some sense.The fourth chapter, reviewing the translation of The Lady of the Camellias and thedevelopment of Chinese modern romantic fiction,does summary and theoretical thinking oninteractive relationship between Chinese modern romantic fiction and translation literature.
