Chen Yi is an influential Chinese-born contemporary woman composer in theworld. Chen Yi and her music have not only drawn the attention from the music circlein the United States but also in China since1990’s. It has become one of the focusesin today’s musical world. This paper is an analysis of Chen Yi’s “Spring in Dresden"for violin and orchestra, a commissioned work written in2003, which is one of therepresentative works composed in the composer’s prime period of her music creation.This paper is an analysis of Chen Yi’s "Spring in Dresden” from the perspectiveof music composition. It covers the general multiple structural design of the work andthe detailed elements in their application, which include the material of the theme, themotives, the pitch organization, the dynamic, the tempo, the rhythm, the meter, thetimbre and the texture, all in an organic whole. To study the composer’s creativethought and the composition technique used in her “Spring in Dresden”, one can learnhow the composer could mingle the Chinese culture and the contemporary classicalmusic tradition in an innovative way, to create the music as a hybrid of East and West,which achieves perceptual and rational unified.In the preface, there is brief introduction of Chen Yi and her music, thereason of selecting the research topic, the present academic research background onthe topic, and the emphasis of study in this thesis. The first chapter is about thecreative background and the sources of the composition. The second chapter is aboutthe general structure and the multiple structural design of the work. The third chapteris about the pitch material and its development in the theme, the motives and theharmonic multi-layer texture. The fourth chapter is about all other music elements andtheir important influence to the whole structure, especially to the design of theclimatic shape. The epilogue is a summary of the composer’s aesthetic and creativethought.
