Stop-motion animation was invented by an accident of cinematography, but this animation form could be constantly improved and inherited till now is not by accident. Stop-motion animation is a form of moving images which created by using the method of filming the materials frame by frame with cameras then playing the frames as a continuous sequence. With this technique, the animator can breathe life into inanimate objects, which strongly expresses the philosophy of Animism. The diversity of stop-motion animation’s materials provides animators great freedom to create their own visual vocabularies. Therefore, artists should know how to observe daily life, sensitive to materials, and use materials creatively. Nowadays, as the technology developing rapidly, stop-motion animation also starts to bring in new technology while they still preserve the traditional crafts. It not only can make the animation more elaborate, but also increase efficiency and reduce the production budgets. As a result, stop-motion animation is going through an unprecedented development at this moment. Therefore, this thesis analyzes the development and innovation of materials in stop-motion animation in the contemporary context by utilizing the methods of analyzing and comparing the use of materials in stop-motion animation.
