“Sansui pingyao zhuan” is the first novel on spirits and devils in the history ofChinese literature. The prototype of the story comes from Wang Ze Uprising, whichoccurred in Qingli seven of Northern Song Dynasty. The book was based on historicalfacts. And in the long process of spreading, historical events gradually fade. Thecomposition of the myth continued to be exaggerated. There are two versions of thebook in the history. One is20chapters signed by Luo Guanzhong, and another is40chapters signed by Feng Menglong. This paper will select the most typical version ofthe two systems, which is the20chapters Shide Tang version and the40chaptersJiahui Tang version. Then we will try to compare them.There are three parts of this paper including introduction，main body andconclusion, I will give a comparative study of “Sansui pingyao zhuan”20chaptersShide Tang version and40chapters Jiahui Tang version.First，the introduction will introduce the reason and significance of this thesis.We will understand the importance of “Sansui pingyao zhuan” in literary history，andwhy we should research it. Then we should review the current research status of“Sansui pingyao zhuan”，and know the inadequacies of their research. So it isnecessary to do further inquiry of it. In particular，a comparative study of the ShideTang and the Jiahui Tang versions need us to make more efforts to research it.Secondly, the body of this paper is divided into six chapters to discuss thesimilarities and differences between Shide Tang version and Jiahui Tang version. Sowe can have a clear understanding of the inheritance and development of the twoversions.The first chapter will compare the version，and introduce the form and spread ofthe two versions. Then we will find why the two versions are most typical.The second chapter will compare the characters. We will explore the similaritiesand differences of the two versions in shaping the characters. Jiahui Tang versionachieves more artistic values than Shide Tang version in this regard. The third chapter will compare the story. We will find the loophole in the plotdescription of Shide Tang version and how Jiahui Tang version improves it.The fourth chapter will compare the narrative structure so that we can explorethe differences of how authors build the structure. We will argue the different arteffect of the change.We will pay attention to the themes in the fifth chapter. We will find thedifferent values of the two versions, and figure out the reason, which attributed to theauthors’ social background, personal experience and literary thought.In the sixth chapter, we will focus on the language style. We try to extract thereason of the differences and the gains and losses.At last, we will summarize the differences in the conclusion, especiallyfocusing on artistic technique and theme of the two versions. I hope my work can giveus a more comprehensive understanding of the two versions and play an active role infurther research.
