Chekhov is an important writer of short stories and famous dramatist in Russia.He is regarded as an outstanding representative of Russian realistic literature genre inthe end of the nineteenth Century. Women’s issues are always the focus in Chekhov’sliterary creation. This paper uses the method of work analysis and literature analysis.By reading the text and carding the development of the writer’s life experience andcreation thought, this paper analysis the various female images in Chekhov multi-actdrama, then discusses how female images seek a sense of existence and exploressocial significance of the female images. Finally this paper deepens our understandingof the drama of Chekhov’s creation, digs out the theme about human existence.The paper includes the following parts: the first part is the introduction, mainlysummarizes the research situation on the whole, and briefly introduces the writer’sexperience of life and major works. The second part is the first chapterr, all kinds offemale images in Chekhov the dramatist. The female images are classified accordingto their different characteristics and the writer’s attitudes towards them.The femaleimages are classified into three categories. The first category is the religious womenwho are at the bottom of the society living unfortunately. Chekhov showed deepsympathy and compassion for them. The second category is vulgar and boring women.Some of them are the reprehensive of the man in the street class,some of them moanlike declining aristocracy. Chekhov hated them and believed that their life ismeaningless. The last category is the ones who are faced with the confusion of life,looking for the meaning of existence, hoping the new life of the future. Chekhov hadhigh expectations for them.The second chapter is the key part of this paper, mainly analyzes the way of thefemale images in Chekhov’s dramas to seek a sense of self existence. This kind of egogratification seeking is divided into three forms, and the three forms are related totheir own survival conditions. The first kind of religious women, they naturally laidtheir hopes on God. It is the power of faith that supports them to confront all the troubles in life. Second types of female are vulgar, their inner demand is lower andboring. By controlling their implementation or the stimulus of external things, theysatisfy their empty heart and intoxicated. Those women who crave for real life try toget realize themselves, looking for spiritual satisfaction. Although they are facing thepuzzlement of existence, but at least they realized that life should not be like this.The third chapter discusses why Chekhov paid close attention to women’s issuesin his literary creation and the positive social significance of it. Chekhov paid closeattention to women’s issues and made tremendous achievements, and all of it isinseparable to his life experience and personal moral self-cultivation. The varioustypes of female images he portrayed in the drama also provided the reliable basis forthe later generations to understand the real situation of that age. The conclusion partmakes a brief summary of the full text, explains the questions Chekhov proposed inhis dramas, as well as limitations in the dramatic works.
