China’s Approach Towards Taiwan Issue Under The Guidance Of The New Security Concept

Since the end of the Cold War, the international political and economic patternshave witnessed rapid and radical changes. It has become the dominant theme of theage to maintain world peace and to promote overall social and economic development,which reflects the common desires of the majority of peoples of all nations in theworld and which represents an irresistible historical trend. It is in the common interestof every nation on earth to discard the outdated Cold War mentality and adopt abrand-new concept concerning international affairs. It is against this backdrop that theChinese government has raised the New Security Concept, which is becoming animportant part of the new thinking of international strategy with Chinesecharacteristics, based upon China’s specific national security interest. The core part ofthe new security concept is based upon the new idea of resolving disputes amongcountries through peaceful means and of going beyond ideological differences to seekcommon interests in defense of national interests. China is now a rising star in theconstellation of great powers and its new security diplomacy presents momentousopportunities for the Asia-Pacific region. On the one hand, China has increasinglyembraced global and regional security policies that improve its image and position bydeveloping a new security concept and establishing a fair and reasonable newinternational order by which world peace and security can be fundamentallyguaranteed. At the same time, China aims to realize its ultimate goal of nationalreunification over the longer term (such as resolving the Taiwan question peacefully).It is the time to recognize its potential opportunities by providing an analysis ofChina’s new security diplomacy with regard to the Taiwan issue.It must be stressed that Taiwan issue is China’s internal affair pure and simple.However, its evolution and eventual outcome have involved a lot of internationalfactors due to complex historical reasons. Therefore, using a totally new approachwhich originally applies for the solutions of international relations disputes for the Taiwan issue is reasonable and natural.
