The importance of the Sino-Japan bilateral relationship means a great significancefor China, whether viewed from the strategic approach or measured by the national interest.Yet the issues of different historical cognitions and territorial disputes have been made themajor obstacles obstructed in the way of the governments and the folks. The differentcognitions about history and the political friction caused by the territorial disputesundoubtedly have influenced and weakened the healthy political development and thecooperation of economic trade. Insteadly, the economic trade’s further development hasboosted the economic interdependence of the two countries. The increase level of theeconomic trade development is favorable to improving the China-Japan relationship. Themore strengthening of economic trade cooperation will be the promoter of the morehealthy development of the Sino-Japan bilateral relationship.Whether the China’s Japan policy or the Japan’s China policy are interferedinseparably by the United States. And media opinion is also an importantly considerablefactor in the American foreign policy making-process. So the466news as to the threemajor issues about the historical cognitions and territorial disputes as well as the bilateraleconomic trade development have been collected in the paper, which lasts from1980to2010in New York Times. And the author has systemically researched and analyzed allthese data in order to reproduce the comments about Sino-Japan relationship in theAmerican mass media. Through analyzing these data which are more than thirty years, thepaper aims to research what the processes and changes of the reports in American massmedia, which has a large number of international readers. And what the images of Chinaand Japan respectively reflected in the changes during the different periods. Researchingthe Sino-Japan bilateral issues in New York Times is favorable to knowing how China bepresented to the international public. And it will also be benificial for providing referencesto recognize China in the western media.
