Most of the scholars in the International Relation field define alignment as a formof security commitment between two nations which based on a formal agreement.Israel doesn’t have any formal align according to this strict definition then. Meanwhilescholars have no doubts regarding the close relations between the United States andIsrael since20c60s that was considered as tacit alignment. Not to mention other great powers, even the United States, the greatest power inthe world, can’t provide Israel an agreement written in black and white becauseAmerican government has to balance the interests between Israel and most of Arabicnations in the Middle East. However it’s possible for Israel to gain consistent support and security guaranteefrom great powers in a tacit and practical way instead of a formal pact. For example, itwas the Soviet Union that agreed to transport amount of weapons to Israel throughCzechoslovakia that played a critical role in the first Middle East War. Anotherexample happened in the20c50s when Israel was both abandoned by the United Statesas well as the Soviet Union. Israeli airspace safety was protected by the aircrafts madein France and ninety percents of the aircrafts in the Israeli military air force came fromFrance at that time. We can image How close relationship between two nations!Israel is needed by great powers on behalf of their interests and strategies in theMiddle East although there is no formal commitment by an agreement. That’s thereason why Israeli Alignment is regarded in this paper as development as well asmilitary cooperation between Israel and great powers, a form of diplomacy pursuingpractical security safety and actual support despite of a formal agreement. This paper will focus on the reasons and traits behind the Israeli Alignment.Three periods’ Israeli relations with the Soviet Union, France and the United States willbe analyzed as three typical cases in each chapter.
