This thesis compares Polish and Hungarian political and economic relations withChina since1989till present day. The goal is to identify the reason why the twocountries that had such similar strategies towards the West, where at the same timepursuing such a different policy towards China? Hungary and Poland at first glancehave a lot in common. After the fall of communism, both countries had to redefine theirforeign policies’ objectives and priorities. The research methods include secondaryresearch of analyzing existing literature, documents and data, and primary research-theinterviews with the diplomats from Polish and Hungarian Embassies in Beijing. Thepaper analyzes many various factors, including historical background domesticeconomic and political situation in recent years, and social issues, etc. Research showsthat the growing role of China in the international arena has not been properlyassimilated and understood in the Polish diplomatic circles. This is due to a negativestereotype of China existing in Poland since1989, mainly concerning the violation ofhuman rights. It appears that Hungary, perhaps due to the operation of large, Chinesecommunity, and pragmatic approach to problems of human rights, can better understandChina’s reality, resulting in a more consistent and reasonable policy toward China.Recommended is to support Polish relations with China based on two pillars, what willprovide more comprehensive approach: creation of the Polish coherent long-termstrategy by the administration and changing Polish society’s opinion society aboutChina. This dissertation proposes nine key suggestions for implementing this two-pillarmodel.
