In the end of the19th century, the western powers set off to carve up China frenzy,British interests in China faced great challenge. In response, the UK moved between themaintenance of the “open door” and their privileges in the Yangtze River Basin. This couldreflectted that the British policy toward China is disorder. From1900to1906, Satow servedas British ambassador to witness the British foreign policy adjustment and transition.After the outbreak of the Boxer Movement, British coordinated with the other powersbut still had its own contradictions, then, under the policy of expanding its commercialinterests in China, under the negotiation of Boxer Protocol, Satow put forward to furthercommercial treaty negotiation, this proposal get national praise; After the Boxer Movement,when the Russian troops wanted to occupy Chinese northeast provinces, Chinese peopleopened anti-Russia Movement, the British attitude was put in watch not action; After this,Japan’s activity in Korea faced more challenge with Russia when the outbreak ofRussia-Japan war, Qing government took an attitude of strict neutral, British attitude wasstill in watch; After the war, Japan replaced Russia and it becomes new threat of the Britishinterests in China, at this time, British ability in the intervention of Chinese affairs abilitydecreased greatly.The full text is divided into six parts:The first part mainly introduces British traditional foreign policy and itstransformation in the early20thcentury, then analysis the reasons for the change.The second part provides a brief introduction of Chinese foreign policy after opiumwar, especially Sino-Japanese war.The third part introduces the primary adjustment under the period of Dou macDonaldduring the Boxer Movement.The last three parts introduces the continuing adjustment and Satow during the seriesof such as negotiations of1901treaty, anti-Russia Movement, the Russo-Japanese War, as well as China according to their o wn speculations on the British intentions made thestrategy adjustment.
