The dissertation analyzes the formation and development of Indian middle class inhistory in terms of capitalist development. It argues that the formation and developmentprocesses of Indian middle class are different from those of western capitalist countries.Besides the basis provided by the indigenous Indian capitalist development and socialstratification, the formation of Indian middle class is relevant with British colonialism in India.Since the Independence, especially from the middle1980s on, due to the growth of moderneconomy, Indian middle class has got a rapid development. The class has contributed much toIndia’s economic development and influenced deeply the country’s society and polity.
