After the independence of India, Nehru was the most important diplomatic strategy andpolicy-makers and practitioners, the formulation and implementation of his diplomaticstrategy revolves around the establishment of India’s great power status.In the Nehru era,India has established the basis for relations with other South Asian countries.South Asianstrategy is an important part of Nehru’s diplomatic thought. This thesis aims to comb the maincontent of South Asian strategy and its strategic kernel. On this basis, analyzes the reasons ofSouth Asian strategic, at the same time, summed up Nehru’s strategic measures. Finally,summarizes Nehru’s South Asian strategy’s influence on the diplomacy of India, analyzes thebasic trend of relationships between India and South Asian countries. This paper uses thehistorical analysis method, the literature material method, dialectical analysis method andother research methods, with a view to a more comprehensive and detailed description of theproblem. In this paper, the structure and the main content is divided into the following fourparts.The first part, explains the content of Nehru’s South Asian strategy. It mainly includesfour aspects. First, India dominated South Asia pattern, leading South Asian affairs. At thesame time, India strongly opposed exterior power’s intervention in South Asia. this is theoverall objectives of South Asia strategy. Second, combat and suppress Pakistan, get thewestern strategic space, Weakening Pakistan’s national power, clear the biggest obstacle ofSouth Asia strategy. Third, control three northern kingdom, to establish the security system ofnorthern India. Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim play an important role in India’s security strategy.Fourth, United India Ocean’s island country, Sri Lanka, ensure the balance of India overallstrategic interests.The second part, analyzes the causes of Nehru’s South Asian strategy. This part mainlyfrom the historical, geographical, reality and Nehru’s personal factors analyzes the formationof South Asian strategy. In history, the British colonial heritage was the main factors. Thehistory of British colonization has great impact to India’s traditional strategy thought, Indiainherited the British India’s political strategy and military heritage, at the same time, thepartition change the region’s strategic pattern. Geographically, South Asian geographicalenvironment in favor of India’s leading role, however, other countries do not have such ageographical advantage. The realistic environment, after independence, the internationalenvironment was favorable. The United States and the Soviet Union can not take into account what happened in South Asia. In addition, the circumjacent environment was alsoadvantageous. At the same time, India’s main task was to develop national economy. Thesealso needed a stable external environment. In addition, Nehru’s personal factors were alsoimportant. His family background, development process, experience in politics, ideology, allaffected the formation of South Asia strategy.The third part, summed up the South Asia strategy’s specific measures. Nehru had takenthe political, military and economic measures. Also, these measures were applied in flexible.Specifically speaking, not only the implementation of political control, but also pay attentionto the negotiation and communication; not only the military offensive, but also be timelyadjustment of military defense; not only to carry out economic aid plan, but also conductedmutually beneficial cooperation in the economic areas with other countries. At the same time,to Pakistan mainly maintain its military offensive and pressure, to the northern countriesmainly through political control and economic aid measures.The fourth part, summarizes South Asian strategy’s influence on the diplomacy of India.First, Nehru’s South Asian strategy laid the cornerstone of India’s South Asian diplomacy.India’s successive governments have been pursuing the strategic goal of dominating Asiapattern. In second, Nehru’s southern strategy is the important cause of long-term confrontationbetween India and Pakistan. India was still stuck in diplomatic predicament with Pakistan.Inthird, Nehru’s South Asia strategy deteriorated relations between India and its surroundingsmaller states, produced negative effects in the diplomacy of India.In short, the basic goal of Nehru’s South Asian strategy is dominating the pattern ofSouth Asian. While the South Asian strategy is the foundation of India’s great nation strategy.Therefore, India through South Asia strategy gaining its status of a world power. In a certainhistorical period, India’s diplomatic policy towards South Asia will continue to along theroute of dominating the regional pattern. Although India has become South Asia’s mostpowerful nation, but its diplomatic process towards South Asia is not smooth. It’s theinevitable negative effects of Nehru’s South Asian strategy.
