Zhu Qinglan, whose courtesy name is Ziqiao, was from Shaoxing, Zhejiang. Before1925, served successively as Patrol Bureau Office of Tianxiang Town, Army standard system of Fengtian, the Army’s33hybrid Brigade, deputy governor of Sichuan military government, commander of army-protecting and Civil Affairs Bureau Director of Heilongjiang Province, Governor of Guangdong Province, Zhongdong Road army commander, and so on. In the tide of the Revolution of1911, he led his troops to respond the revolution. He exerted all his strength to against Yuan Shikai proclaiming himself emperor and the restoration of Zhang Xun, to maintain republicanism, to support Sun Zhongshan’s constitution protection movement, and played a tremendous role in taking back the right of Zhongdong Road. After1925, tired of intrigues in the official circles, he decided to withdraw from the military politicians and focused on the cause of social relief. During the natural disaster in North China, Shaanxi and Gansu’s severe drought, the1931Flood, and the Resistance War, one after another, he concentrated on handling charitable, and delivered the people from an abyss of misery. So he wined the respect of the people and did outstanding contribution to China in its modern times.The article aims to draw a detailed outline of his important historical activities, especially his charitable activities, as detailed as possible to restore the historical facts through drawing lessons from the results of previous studies and leafing over the journals, newspapers, historical data about Zhuqinglan. I hope to remodel the image of him on the basis of the facts and give him a more complete, objective and accurate evaluation.This article is divided into three main sections. The first part discusses his response to the Revolution of1911, his maintenance of the republicanism and his support for the Sun Zhongshan’s constitution protection movement. The second part discusses his representative charity activities before1925:the establishment of the Heilongjiang Provincial Women’s Forced Labor Camp and the establishment of Huachengtaihe Yanken Company. The third part discusses his charity activities after1925:to save Pingjin victims, to relieve the people in northwest China, to rescue the flood victims in Jianghuai Areas and the refugees during the rescue of the War of Resistance Against Japan. The conclusion part gives him a objective evaluation on the basis of Zhu Qinglan’s great historical activities:he developed himself in the life journey and grasped the pulse of the times at the critical moments and conformed to the historical trend. His charities blended in many modern elements and innovated in many aspects with the distinct characteristics of the times.
