Educational Thoughts Of Yuanpei Cai

As a constitutional right, academic freedom was established by Weimar Constitution German1919for the first time. Academic freedom was originated in the Yuanpei Cai’s reform to Peking University since1917. Academic freedom, as a constitutional right, was established and became one of principles of universities in China. My paper centers on academic freedom and specify Cai’s reform to Peking University. I aim to make it clear what’s the correlation among autonomy of university, governance of professors for university and academic freedom. To be specific, autonomy of university help to set a frame of rights, it concerns the relation of university, state and society; governance of professors for university specifies the ideal of academic freedom; however, academic freedom is the vital goal of those two. It is to say, whether autonomy of university or governance of professors for university serve as tools to insure the right of academic freedom. My paper tries to find a better idea to promote the reform, helping to achieve anti-administration in national universities in China.This paper contains four parts altogether.In Chapter1the content of Cai’s ideas for academic freedom, that’s autonomy of university, professors’ governing university and academic freedom.In chapter2ideas for university of Cai’s academic freedom and its resource, Wilhelm Von Humboldt’s idea for university is introduced clearlyIn chapter3the practice of Cai’s academic freedom, especially to introduce the reform of Peking University. Cai established a set of organs to ensure the authority of professors, he aimed to achieve academic freedom in China.In chapter4Significance of Cai’s ideas for academic freedom is set forth. It contains as following:Cai’s reform promoted individuals’ liberty, worked as enlightenment in China, helped to establish the modern system of universities and introduced ideas for academic research into our state and advanced Chinese traditional literature, especially for anti-administration of current universities in China.
