In the long history of Sino-Japanese exchanges, the Japanese view of China experienced number of changes. In ancient times, Japan had an attitude of admiration towards china. However, in modern times, especially in later modern times, Japan changed its attitude from admiration to disdain. After World War II, for some reasons as guilt, Japan started to be close to China. After the Cold War, since Japan and China lost the strategic foundation of common anti-Soviet, Japan gradually alienated China again. Until now, the Japanese view of China has been always changing. So, what are the fundamental causes of the changing Japanese view of China? After all, one is the power China has, and the other one is the power gap between China and Japan. This research is focusing on the Japanese view of China since the cold war on the background of modern China’s development and Sino-Japanese relations. The purpose is to understand how Japanese, from statesman to nationals, think about China society from different angles of views and analyze the hidden factors of all the various judgment so as to make out the countermeasure. As two leading powers in Asia, territorial dispute is the key game point between China and Japan as well as economic conflict which affects Japanese view of China. In addition, culture factor, interest factor and communication factor also have impact on Japanese view of China. This paper is to discuss the pros and cons of Japan’s attitude toward "the rise of China". On one hand, Japan has opportunities to benefit from the development of China, since the rise of China in East Asia will promote Sino-Japanese cooperation and joint effort to maintain regional security. On the other hand, Japan also detects problems in the progress of China’s rise. China’s military growth is a threat as it will be hard for Japan to stand up if China take a tough stance on Taiwan issue. In Japan, economic stagnation in recent decades is linked together with China’s economic growth. Attributing Japanese industrial hollowing-out directly to the development of China becomes an underlying cause of Japanese people’s negative view on China. In addition, this paper also studies the Japanese view of the sensitive issues of Sino-Japanese history and Taiwan for further observation of their cognition of China. In the end of this paper, conclusion will be drawn from a series of analysis for further discussion, including how to promote Japanese to correctly understand China and how China should correctly treat Japan, so that Sino-Japanese relations and China’s image in the eyes of the Japanese could be improved.
