The ups and downs in Sino-Japanese relation are of great significance both geographically and historically. In the new century, with a closer economic cooperation, the two governments took their efforts to establish a "mutual benefit relation based on common strategic merits". On the contrary, the intimacy between the citizens from the two countries has increasingly slipped down, and hit the lows in2005.Mass media plays an important role in image construction and mutual understanding, which becomes a key point to improve relations between the common people of the two countries, and the core of this dissertation.From the perspective of constructivism, this paper employed the theories of international relations and mass communication to analyze the reports of China by Japanese mainstream media. By investigating which kind of images of China has been showed to Japanese citizens, how these images has been constructed, what kind of influence factors behind those reports, this paper intended to provide suggestions on improvement of the China’s image showed in media.This paper consisted of five parts. Chapter1illustrated the background and significance of the study, the domestic and foreign research review and image of China presented by Japanese media before the21th century, which acts as a background of the understanding of China image presented in media entering the new century.Chapter2discussed the research ideas of employing the method of constructivism in international relations and Frame Theory in the field of communication to analyze reports on China from2006to2010in Asahi News, the most representative of Japanese newspaper.Chapter3provided quantitative and qualitative analysis based on the text analysis and the technology of social system analysis by sampling and coding method according to frame theory; demonstrating the main contents, types and trend of the China reports presented in the Asahi News; analyzing the typical subject frame, reporting direction and basic attitude of the Asahi News; summarizing the China image presented in the Asahi News completely for nearly five years.Based on the editors system of Asahi News and the statistical data of chapter3, Chapter4:1) summarized the characteristics of China reports in the Asahi News;2) discussed the mechanism of constructing China image by Japanese media and revealing the related influence factors, such as Nationalism, marketing and Journalism, etc.;3) analyzed the theory of image shaping according to the theory of mass communication, and tries to seek feasible improving tactics combined with practice.The last chapter, a summary of the paper, pointed out that the deviation of shaping China image presented in the media derived from the different value and evaluation system. We should deal with the media influence of shaping China image and the media role of mutual understanding between the two countries from the historical perspective...
