General Education is not only a theoretical issue, but also practical. Duringthe mid-1990s, universities in our country carried out the culture of quality education,academic education gradually began to point up at prominent people-oriented, whilestressing knowledge-based tradition, also started to pay more attention to all-rounddevelopment of students’ personality, innovation and practical ability, along withlife-long sustainable development, on basis of which get on to the general educationpractice and exploration. However, although the concept of General Educationsounds very tempting, the details related to the construction and implementation ofgeneral education curriculum have been full of difficulties. After more than10years’practice, we found that the practice of the past or ongoing general education coursesdid not achieve the desired objectives. Re-examining the concept and practice ofgeneral education courses, drawing the experience of managing universities inforeign countries will allow our general education courses out of the woods, headingto the rational and scientific development.In this thesis, based on the systemic analysis, using sorts of methods, such asdocument analysis, historical research, theoretical argument and comparison of realcases, choosing general education courses of undergraduate phases in highereducation as an object, the theory and practice of general education asinvestigational subject, author mainly argues about the conception and the theoreticalorigin of general education and courses, the principle mode of general education inhigher universities, discusses the difficulties during the construction of generaleducation, and last but not the least, gives strategies and suggestions to theconstruction and development of general education.Thesis can be divided into5chapters, following are the main content:Chapter1. Introduction. In this chapter, author will explain the origin,significance, content, object and methods of this issue, together with the definition ofconception "general education""general education courses". Chapter2. The theoretical origin of academic general education and courses. Inthis chapter, author will introduce relational theory, concentrates on theories of openeducation, people-oriented education, education of all-round development, expoundsrelationships among these theories, general education and the courses.Chapter3. The analysis of the mode in academic general education. Thischapter will illustrate four types of general education courses---core curriculum,courses of Classics and Famous, distribution of compulsory courses and free electivecourses.Chapter4. Difficult situation of academic general education courses. Thischapter will analyze problems in the construction of academic general educationcourses, such as uncertainty of educational orientation, the trouble in realizing thegoals of general education through general elective courses, the embarrassment ofthe function of unofficial general education courses.Chapter5. Construction of academic general education courses. According tothe difficulties mentioned in forth chapter, here author will order relevant strategyagainst construction and development of general education courses, includingreflection to the conception of general education, improvement of contents of thecourses, establishment of specialized organization and institution for the courses,enhancement of modification in educational methods, emphasis on the constructionofunofficial courses, exploration system of general education courses, befitting to eachuniversity.
