Grade changes have taken place in foreign language teaching research since late1970s, that is, the focus of foreign language teaching research was on how to learn aforeign language instead of teaching a foreign language. After decades of painstakingeffort, the learning strategies were found to be the vital factor influencing the result oflearners, which makes that researching on learning strategies was found to be the key toresearching on how to learn.Based on the above analysis, this study carries out the questionnaire from360students and interview from two English teachers in two junior high schools in NorthernShaanxi, FuGu County according to the requirements under New English Curriculum of China (2003). We can fully know students’ use of English learning strategies anddevelop effective ways to explore, eventually the current English teaching can bereflected and reference can be provided.Questionnaires and interviews results show the following three points: students’ useof English learning strategies differ in levels, gender and grades and overall score is low.Teaching materials, methods and condition are all factors affecting the students learningstrategies use. So the reform is in great need in order to adapt to New English Curriculumof China (2003).According to the study results, concrete suggestions for the students’ use oflanguage learning strategies are put forward, that is, efforts should be made from theteaching material and teaching methods. Attention should be paid to different levels,gender and grades. The limitation and further suggestions for the study are pointed out inaddition to the above contents.
