Discussion On University Spirit

University spirit as the eternal theme of higher education is never changed since it is the essentialingredient of survival and development of university. Historically, where a first-class university is rising,there is a state which is to rise and a nation which is to flourish. Methods of literature, comparison and casestudy have been adopted in the thesis. Based on the broad sense of university spirit, comparing with twointernationally renowned universities, the author intended to make analysis and discussion on the spirit ofHenan University.The thesis consists of four parts.The first part is to analyze the theories of university spirit. University spirit can be understood in broadsense and narrow sense. In the broad sense, it signifies the consensus and stable value obtained by itsparticipants in the course of inheriting. It is the essence and core of campus culture, and a kind oforganizational spiritual state formed through precipitation and sublimation of its historical evolution. In thenarrow sense, it refers to the specific university spirit, which means a certain university’s spiritualappearance or community existent mindset accumulating and developing in its long history.The second part is to analyze the spirit of renowned universities. To further recognize the universityspirit, the classical spirits of famous universities are the best examples for us to learn. Harvard, as one ofthe top universities in the world since established in1636, shows the great spirit of seek truth, liberaldemocracy, legal first and independence of thought which became the secrets of her success. To comparingwith Harvard, we learnt that we should pay more attention on the motivation to seek the truth, how toshorten the distance between teachers and students, how to make the liberal democracy atmosphere, andhow to strengthen the creative ability of students. Not only the western universities have such classicalspirit, so does domestic universities. Take Peking University as an example, freedom and tolerance ofthought, which is very impressed by Chinese, has became the most spirit of this oldest university in China.Actually, it is not easy to do that. We must try our best with the whole society to reach the goal.The third part is to analyze the spirit of Henan University. Henna University has been established foralmost100years with inevitably lumpy. Nowadays it is still making great contributions to the society. Inthe leadership of30outstanding presidents successively, with the constantly striving of all the participants, it has formed excellent university spirit and campus culture.The last part is to emphasize the significance and path of spirit innovation. Recent years, governmenthas strongly supported the development of Henan University, nevertheless, internal Innovation andcreativity is more essential and significant, in the respects of spirit, talents, brand, service, management,cultural development and institutional construction.
