The Lesson Of Our Contemporary College Students Volunteer Activities And Thoughts

Volunteering, a noble cause pursued by many in our country, is further developed in recent years with the increase of the overall intellectual level of our fellow countrymen and the advancement of the society as a whole. During the past decades, we have achieved extraordinary accomplishments in the volunteer service sector, and our college students, displaying the spirit of love, devotion and professionalism, have become the backbone force in offering warm and effective services in areas such as poverty reduction, education, environmental protection, health care, assistance for the elderly, legal assistance and various kinds of other programs. The college students, who demonstrate a strong sense of social well-being and fine qualities in the course of providing the much-needed services, epitomize the best in contemporary Chinese youth and contribute in their own way to the building of a harmonious society and the improvement of the entire human race.In spite of the marked progress that has been made in our work concerning college student volunteer activities, there also are challenges and difficulties. And these problems, if not handled properly, may largely inhibit the healthy development of this already-flourishing cause in China. This paper, which begins with a historical overview of volunteer practice by college students in our country, is an attempt at analyzing the basic features and functions of college student volunteer service, the major problems connected with the providing of such service, and possible solutions. At the close of the paper, the author puts forward certain concrete suggestions as to how to ensure the healthy and steady development of college student volunteer service.
