Grammar teaching has been playing a very important role in English teaching in China. However, for many years, it has been laborious, time-consuming, and ineffective. In our teaching practice, teachers usually teach grammar rules and students practise mainly by means of multiple choices, which results in tiredness and boredom in both students and teachers. Therefore, it’s quite urgent to change this situation.Based on the study of grammar teaching class in senior high schools, this paper explores the appropriate ways by applying the situational teaching method to grammar teaching, so as to improve the efficiency, thus helping the students turn their language knowledge into language skills through observation, reflection and application.In the course of the study, while creating situations and designing activities, we have paid special attention to the relevance between situations and five factors, namely teaching objectives, pragmatic functions of the target grammatical items, students’life experience, literary works and students’ feelings. Eight cases studies are included in the paper.With careful classroom observations and data analysis, the following conclusions are reached:1. The application of the situational teaching method to the English grammar teaching in senior high schools can stimulate and maintain student’s interests in grammar learning.2. The application of the situational teaching method to the English grammar teaching in senior high schools can, to some extent, renew students’ideas and change students’ methods of grammar learning, thus helping improve their language competence.3. The application of the situational teaching method to the English grammar teaching in senior high schools can improve students’reading skills, especially in understanding long and difficult sentences, and speaking as well as writing skills.4. Due to the life-like situations, use-oriented activities, integration of four language skills, various opportunities of language use and close attention to students, the creation and application of appropriate situations can improve the effectiveness of grammar teaching.Main suggestions for further practice include:1. Teachers should carefully design situations and activities according to the appropriate teaching objectives.2. Teachers should closely monitor every detail in grammar teaching, such as pragmatic functions of the target grammatical items, suitable sequence of teaching, form and content, enough practice, etc.3. To fulfill the task, teachers should cooperate in teamwork and display collective wisdom.
