The Professional Characteristics Of Secondary Science Teachers To Students’ Academic Effects:a Case Of Bukidnonin The Philippines

This thesis is an investigative study which looks into the professional characteristics of the secondary science teachers in the division of Bukidnon, Philippines and its students’ academic effects. It dwells on the examination of the personal and professional profile of the respondents which were interposed against the background of their students’ performance in academic measures over the course of three to five years of their professional careers. To provide a compelling and objective structure for scrutiny and presentation of the research topic, the study utilized quantitative and qualitative methods of gathering data. The findings of the study revealed that the secondary science teachers in the Division of Bukidnon, Philippines are inadequately trained in various disciplines of educational professional development context which includes subject matter, pedagogy, and ICT use among others. The respondents of the study are found to be heavily burdened with their teaching loads which leave them little time to conduct remedial instruction, check home works, and do some readings. The results of the National Achievement Test (NAT) for the last three years presents an alarming downward trend which could only suggest to be reflective of the professional characteristics of the respondents. Furthermore, the study found out that more than half of the respondents have not won any academic contest in the last five years. It is the therefore the endeavor of the thesis to present the state of the subject under scrutiny. In this manner, it is prayed that a reference framework for bridging the policy and practice gaps shall be set forth for the key officials in educational sector to seriously consider.
