Reading comprehension monitoring, as an important metacognitive process in reading, has greatly attracted the interest of psychologists and educationists in the last three decades. Comprehension monitoring can guide the course of reading. Moreover, the development of comprehension monitoring ability can help students to improve their reading comprehension ability. The main target of reading instruction is to develop the students' reading comprehension ability, which depends on their development of comprehension monitoring ability. A lot of researches at home and abroad show that comprehension monitoring ability is an important factor to distinguish between good and poor readers. Fortunately, reading comprehension monitoring ability can be improved by reading instruction training. So it's important for us to grasp the developing features and countermeasures of comprehension monitoring ability, which can be useful to English reading instruction and the improvement of the students' comprehension monitoring ability.To start with, this thesis has made elaborate details about the definition, the structure and the functions of comprehension monitoring. Comprehension monitoring, means that the readers consider their comprehension activities as consciousness objects, and are going on monitoring, evaluating, controlling, and adjusting actively in the whole process of reading comprehension. Reading comprehension monitoring structure generally includes four parts: first, formulating the reading goal;second, monitoring the comprehension and choose the strategy of comprehension, choice understanding strategy;third, checking the reading effect;fourth, taking remedial measures. Reading comprehension monitoring is that individuals make evaluation and adjustment for the reading comprehension process, and the evaluation makes the judgment to the reading comprehension state which is carrying on. While, the adjustment in the comprehension process is that individuals take some remedial measures to solve the problems which occur in that process.The scholars at home and abroad have made vast researches on reading comprehension monitoring, and have proven the maneuverability of fostering that ability, thus they have provided the feasible theory basis for it in the high school stage;Whilehigh-school students' physiological development characteristic and the status of English study in the elementary education stage, as well as new "Full-time Compulsory education Ordinary Senior middle school English Curriculum Standard", which both have decided the feasibility and necessity of fostering high-school students' reading comprehension monitoring ability. This thesis bases on the researches of the monitoring consciousness of high-school students toward English study, which according to the reading comprehension monitoring theory and the study characteristic of high-school students, and bring forward the tentative plan of bringing the reading comprehension monitoring into the teaching of high school English curriculum. It also brings forward the principle which should be followed when fostering reading comprehension ability, and it also suggests unifying the direct instruction pattern and the interactive educational model to foster reading comprehension monitoring ability, moreover, it gives paradigms about how to foster that ability through an English reading demonstration lesson. A semester teaching experiments have proven that fostering reading comprehension monitoring ability in the daily teaching is really helpful to enhance students' reading achievement.Finally, the thesis points out that it's really feasible to foster high-school students' reading comprehension ability, at the same time we should pay great attention to imparting the monitoring knowledge, and make sure that students can know themselves, understand themselves, and learn to monitor themselves, so as to improve the reading comprehension monitoring ability.
