| Poverty-stricken students are a special group that can’t be ignored among the university students. In recent years, as the enrollment for the high education increased rapidly the number of poverty-stricken students has increased gradually which has posed many problems. The number of poverty-stricken students accounted for more than30percent in many universities, some of it is more than50percent. The poverty-stricken students of high college has already aroused wide public concern. Impact of family background, upbringing and material condition, the academic situation of the poverty-stricken students has its own specialty. Researching the academic status of the poverty-stricken students, analyzing its associated problems and causes will help the needy students improve their learning level and grow healthy, which also benefit to improve the quality of high education and managing, achieve education equitable. That is the start point of this research.This research is based on the theory of Education Equality and the theory of School’s Input, using "NSSE-China" as the tools for survey. The group of this research is the poverty-stricken students of Guangxi University. In the research, a comprehensive understanding about the academic achievement of the poverty-stricken students will be given by using questionaires and interviews, then two reasons that influnce the current situation of their academic achievement will be showed. Finally a suggestion will be made for the status quo and causes.This research includes six parts.Part one reviews current status of the academic achievement of university students,summarize the shortcomings in current associated studies and analyze the probable space for follow-up studies. The purpose, meaning and integral thought of this research will be given in the part one. Part two describes the concepts associated with this research and the theoretical basis of it.Part three describes the objects, the using tools, the detailed steps of this research. The credibility and efficiency of this above method will be also showed.Part four shows the status of needy undergraduates of Guangxi University including academic records, knowledges and skills, prizes, communication skill, management capability and social practice capacity. A comparison of poverty-stricken students with non-impoverished students will be made. The gender, grade, source place, nationality and single and non-single child aspects of the poverty-stricken students also will be compared. The comparison result show that the poverty-stricken students get higher scores than non-impoverished students in the examinations, they also can get more prizes than non-impoverished students, but they aren’t very good at English and computer, the abilities to communication,organize, manage and practice are poorer than non-impoverished students. At the same time, poverty-stricken stduents from different backgrounds perform differently in the academic achievement astandards.Part five is a analysis of the causes that affect the academic achievement of poverty-stricken students by checking their specific performances in the learning process. There are two main causes. On one hand, because of the students’family situations including financial trouble, upbringing, inferiority psychology of the poverty-stricken students and a lack of planning goals. On the other hand, because of the university which includes the lack of the university spirit, the alienation of teacher-student relationship and the problems of teaching quality.Part six is a suggestion for improvement about the current academic status of the poverty-stricken students and causes. For the students, they should educate themselves to raise confidence, improve the problems in the learning process,clarify a goal and develop an action plan to target it. For the university, they should recreate the university spirit, strengthen guidance and education of students, promote teaching quality, establish a good rapport with the students, strengthen care and communication. |
