Teaching and testing are the two most important part of the school education system, buthave two different functions. Teaching, as a core way, is to implement the targets of education,and plays a main role in the education system; testing services in teaching in the auxiliaryposition. The high school English testing and high school English teaching are the corecomponents of the entire school English teaching system, and they interact each other andmutually reinforcing. The purpose of Senior English teaching is to complete teaching tasksprescribed by the new curriculum, so that students can have specific levels of language abilityrequired by the new curriculum standards; high school English testing is to check the highschool English teaching effect on students’ language ability. On the one hand, students’language ability is to objectively evaluate, on the other hand, it can provide feedback forteaching. At present, the majority of English teachers and the enthusiasts of English educationwidely believed that there are inconsistency problems between high school English testingand English teaching due to long-term impact of the examination-oriented education; thepositive backwash effect of English testing on English teaching can not function. This thesiswill investigate inconsistency problems between high school English testing and high schoolEnglish teaching, so that it can be good for high school English curriculum reform.This thesis, by the perspective of empirical research, using questionnaires and interviews,investigate the inconsistency problems between English testing and English teaching in highschool. By an analysis of64student interviews and64English teacher questionnaires in threehigh schools in Lin Yi district, we found that: problems of inconsistency between Englishtesting and English teaching in high school exist widely in high school English testingfrequency, testing content, test design, test sources, the examination results processing, suchas the high school English testing is too frequent; testing is inconsistent with the teachingcontent; testing imitates seriously the college entrance examination, emphasis on the use ofmultiple-choice; tests come mainly from the used tests, lack of the original tests for thestudents; processing of the results of the examination is simple and formal so that theexperiences learned in testing can not be effectively applied to guide teaching practices in thefuture. Therefore, we hope that the investigation about inconsistency problems between English testing and English teaching in high school can reduce the English testing negativewashback effect on English teaching, play a positive backwash effect, and provide a referencefor high school English teaching reform.
