With the further reform in China Curriculum and College EntranceExam, more and more attention has been paid to the teaching ofEnglish writing. In the meanwhile, the improvement of students’ readingability has come into focus. In class, teacher of English lays moreemphasis on cultivating students’ reading ability instead of the ability toanswer grammatical questions correctly. In fact, English reading andwriting are two abilities that are both independent and interdependent.Reading is the input of the language, while writing is the output of thelanguage. Without either, the other would be impossible to be furtherdeveloped. So, what students read has a direct influence on the abilityof writing. This thesis focuses on the improvement of senior high schoolstudents’ wring ability by teaching English reading skills. This researchstresses the enlargement of vocabulary, the consolidation of sentencepatterns and the development of the structure of passages, which areall very helpful in students’ writing process. Before the experiment, a lot of research materials on therelationship between English reading and writing have been studiedand the process of the experiment has been designed based on thestudy. In the course of the study, evaluations have been made of thelevel of students’ writing ability before, in the middle of and after theexperiment respectively, as well as clear record of students’ vocabulary, sentence patterns and passages structures. After more than one year’sexperiment, the students in the experimental classes have madecomparatively bigger progress in English writing. As the controlled classhas been following the original way of teaching reading and writing, the results of their writing ability are comparatively inferior. The aim ofthis thesis is to prove the possibility and feasibility of improving studentswriting ability by emphasizing different skills in teaching reading. As long as teachers are aware of the interdependence of English reading andwriting and emphasize the development of both of them, theproblems students now have in writing can be solved to a certain, if notgreater extent.
