Portfolio aims to display the representative works collected for certain purposes,which can be divided into different types, such as student portfolio, teaching portfolio,displaying portfolio and evaluating portfolio. The study of portfolio dates back to the1960s–70s when the Assessment Reforms Movement was advocated in Westerncountries. Portfolio was first used by some professionals, like painters, designers,doctors and architects, and later introduced to the field of education, in particular, inclassroom teaching. By the end of the1980s, some educators in China have done someresearch on portfolio, but few of them pay more attention to the field work orexperiments within longer periods.According to the new version of English Curriculum Standards (ECS), this thesishas an investigation of portfolio and portfolio assessment in the teaching of seniorEnglish reading based on the experiment carried out in No.4Middle School ofXiangxiang. The purpose of this thesis aims to answer the following research questions:whether portfolio assessment can improve students’ reading ability; whether it canchange students’ learning attitude; and whether it can realize the change in teachingassessment.The thesis consists of introduction, literature review, research design, dataanalysis, discussion and conclusion. The first introductory chapter is mainly concernedwith the research background, significance, questions and the outline of the thesis. Thesecond literature review chapter is about the rationale and the research of portfolioboth at home and aboard. The third chapter is the design of the research based on afive-month experiment, including the pre-test, the middle-test, the post-test,questionnaires and some interviews. The trainees are from No.4Middle School inXiangxiang. The pre-test and questionnaire were done in the first week, the middle-testwas carried out in the mid-term and the post-test and interviews were finished at theend of this term. The fourth chapter is the data collection and analysis, which showssome positive effects of the reading portfolio approach on the students. The fifthchapter is about the discussion of the results, in which the thesis compares the resultsof this experiment with the existing conclusions. In the conclusion, the thesissummarizes the results and shortcomings of the experiment and makes some furthersuggestions for improvement. From the experiment, the author believes that readingportfolio can help students in the range of their reading abilities, approaches and attitudes. Most importantly, it will change the traditional teaching assessment andcombine different ways of teaching assessments together.
