Based on the researches home and abroad, this thesis makes a study onthe application of contract learning in teaching table tennis majors in the sportsschools and universities from the definition, theoretical bases and teaching proceduresof contract learning approach by employing document-data method, interviews,questionnaires, experiments and mathematical statistics. Experiments have done onthe table tennis majors of Grade2009in Physical Education of Chengdu SportsUniversity, testing their physical constitution, skills and self efficiency in a traditionalteaching environment and in a contract learning environment. Through the experiment,it has been found that the contract learning approach is more significant in helping thestudents master the skills, develop their learning motives, modify their attitudes andenhance their initiatives as well. After the experiment, the students have displayed ahigher ability to teach themselves and a better sense of self achievement than thestudents in the control group. Based on the contrastive analysis of the students in theexperiment group and the control group before and after the experiment, this thesishas come to the following conclusions:1. In evaluating the skills, there is a striking difference between the students ofthe control group and of the experiment group on the skills of forehand attack、forehand loop、service, the result being P<0.05. When it comes to the standardreaching, there is an obvious difference between the students of the control group andof the experiment group on the standard of forehand attack、forehand loop, having theresult of P<0.05except on the standard of service whose result is P>0.05. It is,therefore, concluded that both the contract learning approach and the traditionallearning approach can effectively increase the sporting skills and that the contractlearning approach is applicable to the major courses.2. In teaching table tennis, the students should write down their targets in thecontract and when hitting their targets through their efforts, the students become farmore self-confident. Hence the contract learning approach helps raise the selfefficiency in the students.3. When applied in the teaching of table tennis in sports schools and universities,the contract learning approach helps improve the students’ initiatives, promote theinteractions between the students and develop their ability to learn independently with a correct learning attitude.4. In the teaching process, both parties play different roles and different modes ofteaching are adopted in the traditional teaching environment and in the contractlearning environment.
