Effects Of Reading Aloud On English Teaching And Learning In Primary Schools

Reading aloud is a traditional teaching and learning method and it has been widely used for a long time. However, without the exams for examining the ability of reading aloud, this method is neglected by most of teachers and students, especially in primary school. Basing on this phenomenon, the author does this study. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to arouse teachers and students’interest in reading loud and show some effects of reading aloud on English teaching and learning in primary school.In order to get the goals of this study, the researcher gives some research questions and some researches on reading aloud abroad and at home. The answers to these questions are found by the experiment in this study. Before the experiment, the author does a questionnaire which shows us the attitude of most of the teachers and students towards reading aloud. In the experiment, there are two groups (the experimental group and the controlled group).Through the results from the variables between the experimental group and the controlled group, the author hopes that the major findings of this study can be discovered. And the author collects the data of the results of the experiment with the two instruments which are the students’writings and the conferences between the researcher and students which are made into tapes. From the results of the analysis, it can be seen clearly that there are effects of reading aloud on English teaching and learning in primary school, such as the effects on the acquisition of vocabulary, the effects on the reading comprehension ability and so on.Basing on the findings of this study, the author gives some practical implications for English teaching and learning. In primary school, English teachers should give students proper time to read English aloud and give them some instructions on reading aloud skills.
