English is an important basic subject in the primary school, and the quality of English teaching is directly related to the development of students’ English level. To learn a language is to speak the language. For the pupils, a prerequisite for speaking is reading, and reading fluently."New Curriculum" clearly states:the four skills of English learning are "listening,speaking, reading, and writing", Reading well or not directly affects the student’s language ability, especially the English expressing ability and the language listening and speaking ability. Reading aloud, is to use stress, rhythm and intonation skills and tools to express thoughts and feelings. English teaching in primary schools in Zhongshan has been carried out for over ten years, however, the teachers rarely spend time on reading training for the students in primary school English teaching. There is still a situation of "dumb English" even after the students have learned English for six years in primary school.In response to this situation in primary school, the author is trying to find a solution to the problem in an effective way, proposing the teaching of English reading is the main intention of this thesis. This research is targeted at the students from Class1,Grade4in Number Two Primary School. After two questionnaires, and through a year’s teaching practice, the author drew a conclusion that reading training in English teaching in primary schools can not only help to mobilize the enthusiasm of the students, but also help improve students’ English reading level, and promote the improvement of teaching quality too.There are six parts in this thesis. Part One:Introduction. It explains the background and the reason of this study and describes the research ideas and methods. Part Two:It shares the study and review about reading. and defines the concept of reading. The author examines a large number of documents and materials on teaching of English reading primary school through research literature. Understanding the current status of English reading and trends in primary schools, this study provides a strong practical basis and theoretical basis. From the survey of the English teachers and students in the primary schools in Development Zone, Zhongshan City, to understand the current teaching of English reading in primary schools, to give the analysis of students’ reading results through the experimental methods. Part Three: Analysis of the problems of English reading status in primary schools. Through the survey of the English reading status in primary school, analyze the status that current teaching of English reading is neglected, which leads to poor levels of reading status. To make an analysis for the reasons leading to this situation. This situation are the result of the exam-oriented education, teaching evaluation misleading and ignored the student’s status. Part Four: According to the reading status in primary schools, we put forwards some effective strategies. We hope to find some practical solutions and countermeasures, let the teachers, students, scholars pay more attention to the English reading, in order to improve the English reading levels in primary schools.Part Five:Experiments for teaching of English reading in primary schools. The author selects No.1and No.2Primary schools in Development Zone, Zhongshan City as the experimental models. The research idea is to find ways to improve the pupils’ ability of English reading, by the way of the teaching of English reading in primary schools.Part Six:Conclusion. To elaborate follow-up questions of the study and give some suggestion for improvement.All in all, this research helps to activate students’ participation actively, to develop their self-confidence, to improve students’ reading level, especially to improve the quality of primary education. The study has pointed out a new way for the township primary school English teaching, and it deserves popularization.
