There are great changes in the new high school biology textbooks, which isbasing on the standard of the courses. Since the fall of2004the biology textbooks ofPeople’s Education Press(PEP) has been used in Guangdong province. The textbookadopts the principle of centering on students both in the structure and content anddesigns many activities for students,development. Besides, the status of the newtextbooks has changed a lot. All the changes above have put forward a higher demandfor teachers. For the purpose of researching high school biology teachers’ adaptationfor the new textbooks, we used a questionnaire titled as ‘Adaptive Research On HighSchool Biology Teachers of PEP Textbooks’ as the main tool. Interviews and casestudies were also employed in this research. Our study involved teachers’understanding and evaluation of new courses, understanding of the new textbooks, theadaptation about the new teaching content design of new textbooks, integration ofnew textbooks for teaching design, teaching using the new books, rethink the effect ofusing the new textbooks were also focused on.The results show that the high school biology teachers of Guangzhou are still inthe process of adapting the new textbooks, and some of them adapt well. Theyunderstood the new textbooks more profoundly than others, were able to adapt to thedesign of content, can teach flexibly using the new textbooks, and introspect on theeffect of using new textbooks timely. However there are also some defects: someteachers lack the advanced educational philosophy and theoretical knowledge relatedto the new curriculum, some schools lack curriculum resources, lots of teachers haveno introspection about teaching, the teachers’ training is ineffective in some schools,The administrative system of school give a heavy burden to teachers and someschools have not enough funding for education.Consequently, we recommend that biology teachers in high school should learnnew curriculum concepts on their own initiatively, strengthen the understanding of thenew textbooks and learn more about the frontier of biology, expand knowledge areas,improve the ability to collect curriculum resources, enhance the awareness of integrating the curriculum resources, strengthen ability for cooperation and learningmutually, introspect on teaching practices timely. School leaders should make teachertraining implemented, and provide more manners and contents for teacher training,expand the school curriculum resources in various ways, establish curriculumresources sharing platform, reform the school management system, alleviate teachers’burden. The administrative departments of education should improve the objectiveconditions for the new curriculum effectively, provide appropriate teaching andlearning conditions for the implementation of the new textbooks, go deep into theteachers and adapt teaching materials in time.
