The research on the cultivation of democracy quality of today’s college students, as part of the political and democratic research in China, is of great theoretical and practical importance. The theoretical importance shows in the following three aspects:First, it contributes to the further development of Chinese political democratization theories; Second, it can deepen the understanding of Chinese political democratization theories; Third, it contributes actively pushing forward the research on the cultivation of political quality of today’s college students. In the practical aspect, it is also beneficial for putting forward the democratic politic in China, strengthening college students’ideological and political quality as well as drawing a clearer picture for the education workers to realize the importance of cultivating the democracy quality of today’s college students, thus lifting their work consciousness in this aspect.The paper first differentiates the definition of democracy, democracy quality and the cultivation of democracy quality, laying a solid theoretical foundation for the latter part of it. Then, by analyzing the questionnaires collected among students in Chengdu Medical College and Sichuan University, the writer describes the general situation on the democracy quality of college students, the problems regarding to it as well as the causes for these problems. The result shows:college students generally have democracy quality, their quality of participation, however, is a little lower than their quality of equality and public consciousness; the gap of attitude between "treating democracy" and "practicing democracy" is big; the democracy knowledge mastered by today’s college students is far from enough and the ability to "influence democracy" is a bit weak; the democracy belief of a few college students is obscure, even absent. Regarding to the above mentioned problems, this paper analyzes the deep-rooted reasons for these problems, suggesting social environment, colleges, families and individuals as the main factors affecting the democracy quality of today’s college students. It includes social environment factors relating to politic, economy and culture; college factors connecting to democracy education and practice; family factors in related to family education and influence; and individual factors such as the ability to tell the right from the wrong, to identify authorities, the attempt to pursue the easiest way to success and so on. In the latter part, the writer proposes some suggestions for improving the democracy quality of today’s college students. In general, it is necessary to be democratic and systematic in improving the democracy quality of college students and integrate theories with practice. It is necessary to better our society, college and individuals. It is also necessary to innovate the way to raise the democracy quality of college students by utilizing the ideological and political education theory into practice.
