PE lessons is a very important parts-of physical work in school. And the textbooks are one of the components of the PE class. Since the first syllabus for PE lessons in PRC was published in1954, there have been6syllabuses. Gymnastics textbooks are indispensable part in those syllabuses. Seen from the perspective of time, its percentage is27.1%—32.9%in middle high school and37.1%—38%in senior high school.The Chinese government published Standards for National PE Lessons and Health of Pupils and Standards for National PE Lessons and Health of Middle-High School Students on June,1st in2001and Standards for National PE Lessons and Health of Senior-High School Students in2003. And the one in2003signifies the development of reform in PE lessons. The government’s requirements list the detailed rules for gymnastics teaching.As one of the first pilot areas, the standard has been applied in Ningxia for ten years. The thesis adopts literature review, interview of authority, questionnaire and mathematical statistic methodologies to study the current situations in42ordinary high schools, including the numbers and quality of PE teachers, students’attitudes towards PE lessons after the reform in light of the new documents by the government, and factors influencing the PE lessons’teaching and learning.On the basis of the above study and survey, the thesis tries to figure out the current situation in PE lessons’teaching and learning in Ningxia and offers suggestions and strategies to improve it.1. Generally, P.E. teachers in middle school of Ningxia are at the age of20to40, and most of them are of level2and level1in their profession. Male teachers are relatively more than female ones. They are mainly undergraduates,63.07%of whom major in physical education. As a result, neither the number nor the qualification of gymnastic teachers could meet the demand.2. P.E teachers lack enthusiasm. This is mainly because of the heavy workload, low income and lack of attention from school.3. Students cannot have normal gymnastic classes for lack of the specific instruments. What the schools have is basic equipment, such as skipping ropes, small mats, some kinds of ball.4. PE teachers do not know enough about new curriculum as well as the importance of gymnastics and it assumes small proportion in PE classes. In gymnastics courses, teaching content is mainly about setting-up exercises, formation organization, and acrobatic gymnastics and jumping exercises. Besides, most teachers adopt traditional pedagogy during class. The students are often tested through evaluation.5. Most students love sports. And gymnastics ranks as the fifth in boys’ sport and the third for girls. Students lack the knowledge about new curriculum and what the students know about gymnastics comes mainly from TV, network and other media.6. The reasons why the students like gymnastics are as follows. It enables to shape their body, to improve their physique, to develop indomitable willpower and to enhance the ability to protect themselves. While for others, the reasons why they dislike this kind of sport are as follows. The sports is difficult for them and they are afraid of it.7. The factors affecting gymnastics teaching in the middle school of Ningxia is as follows:the lack of training fields, less capable teachers, the students being not interesting and their physique being not enough good, and the new curriculum being not easy to carry out.Strategies for improving the Gymnastic Teaching situations of general high schools in Ningxia are as follows:First, the school should increase the financial support for sports equipment and field, pay due attention to strengthening the construction of teaching stuff, and moderately increase the income of the gym teachers.Second, the gymnastics teachers should standardize the PE teaching, enhance their professional skills, and make the gymnastic teaching class more rich and colorful by appropriately making use of the available field and equipment.Third, the teachers should try to stimulate the students’interest for gymnastic, raise the students’receptivity of gymnastics, builds a good gymnastic atmosphere by regularly holding extracurricular gymnastics competition.
